Autism Day awards recognise vital community service

ACT Minister for Disability, Housing and Community Services Ms Joy Burch today presented the Autism Day awards on behalf of Autism Asperger ACT.
The awards are part of Autism Awareness month, and recognise the contribution of individuals in professional and community sectors to enhancing the lives of people with an autism spectrum disorder and their families.

Autism Asperger ACT is a non government organisation which supports families with a child with disability with information about autism spectrum disorders and how to find and access appropriate services for them. Ms Burch praised the organisation’s work in the community.

“Autism Asperger ACT provides a vital community service in supporting people with autism, their families, friends and carers,” Minister Burch said.

“We often hear of the difficulties for families with a child with autism, but it is also important to highlight that many people are working hard to overcome some of the barriers they face.”

Ms Burch said she was also pleased to support to ‘Bubble Day’, a local initiative of Autism Asperger ACT. Bubble Day uses the symbolism of bubbles to represent the nature of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and helps children with ASDs to “burst out of their bubble of isolation”, and to raise awareness and understanding of autism in school communities.

“Sharing knowledge of developmental disorders with the community is important as awareness helps broaden opportunities for individuals by creating accepting and understanding environments.”
