An ACT disability support worker will complete a diploma in horticulture after winning the Joan Berry Scholarship, which provides funding for the ongoing development of disability support workers.
Minister for Disability Joy Burch presented the award on behalf of National Disability Services ACT to Douglas Humbert for his work with LEAD, an organisation that develops and delivers initiatives, including maintenance and gardening that provide opportunities for people with disability to increase their participation in the community.
“Mr Humbert is passionate about his work, I am delighted that this award will assist him to better support clients and colleagues,” Ms Burch said.
“He has a strong belief that horticulture can provide not only real life skills for people with disability, but also increase their potential for meaningful employment.”
Ms Burch said that disability services such as LEAD had an important role in enabling people with a disability to participate in the community.
The Joan Berry Scholarship is named in honour of a long-standing supporter of National Disability Services ACT, and is awarded annually by National Disability Services, the peak body for non-government disability service organisations. The scholarship will give Mr Humbert financial assistance to complete his studies.
“I commend ACT National Disability Services for directing Ms Berry’s bequest towards an initiative that will make a long term difference in the sector.
“As well as contributing to raising the professional base of workers in the area of disability services, the award helps in bringing awareness about their work to enhance the lives of people with disability.
