Tuggeranong families join Chinese New Year celebrations

Released 14/02/2010

Minister for Children and Young People Ms Joy Burch MLA, will today join families to celebrate Chinese New Year at the Tuggeranong Child and Family Centre.

"Today's gathering at the Tuggeranong Child and Family Centre is one example of how we are connecting with different cultural groups, and also shows how the Centre's working to engage more effectively with families from diverse cultural backgrounds," said Ms Burch.

Families from the Tuggeranong area will take part in a range of activities including making traditional Chinese lanterns and paper dragons. Those visiting the centre will also have the chance to learn more about local services and programs available.

"We know that investing early in a child's life results in the best outcome for them - and for our community. The Child and Family Centres provide information and practical support for families in a welcoming and family friendly environment," Ms Burch said.

"Child and Family Centres offer families drop-in parenting information and support, and also feature maternal and child health clinics, new parent groups, plus outreach programs like the popular Paint and Play in the park," Ms Burch added.

The ACT Government has established Child and Family Centres in Tuggeranong and Gungahlin, with a new Centre in Belconnen set to open later this year.

Today's event was organised by the Support Asian Women's Friendship Association and the Tuggeranong Child and Family Centre.
